Impressing with Holy Presence

During late antiquity, Christians began to impress the Eucharistic bread with symbolic decoration, a process that continues today in the Eastern rite.  The bread, the same leavened bread that late antique people typically ate, was stamped with a two-dimensional mold while baking.  The action of imprinting was thought to impart the ordinary bread with holiness.
